About Lilian
Biography
Those who write about her art, says Lilian Frei, would do better to speak of her survival in the world, her habits, and her sensual pleasures. The artist finds it difficult to navigate our standardized way of life. She needs something to fight against or with. It’s all or nothing for her!
In her long-standing artistic practice, Lilian Frei continually seeks and discovers new ways to break through and question the seemingly self-evident norms of everyday life. She often works actively with people who are encountering such art for the first time. In contrast, her sculptural and installation works deliver clear statements that, unlike performance, remain present in the space.
In 2024, Lilian was nominated for the prestigious „Swiss Performance Art Award“ and participated in „Mandamiento“ at the „PEPA Pequeño Evento de Performance Art“ in Madrid. That same year, she was awarded a scholarship for the City of Dübendorf’s art studio by the Dübendorf Cultural and Sports Commission. She exhibited at the juried group exhibition „Objektkunst im Fokus“ with Visarte Luzern, as well as at the annual exhibition at „Galerie Kupper Modern & Friends“ (Visarte Zürich) in October 2024.
In 2023, she presented the performances „Sklaverei“ at the „Raum für Performance“ in Lucerne and at „Espacio materia“ in Panama City.
In 2022, Lilian performed „Am Puls“ at the „Medina Art Gallery“ in Rome and participated in „Death Café“ at both the „Auswahl 22“ exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the „BANG BANG, Soziale Eleganz“ exhibition at the Tinguely Museum in Basel. Other performances that year included „Take Away“ at Kunstraum Baden and „Am Puls der Zeit“ at the „_artundweise kunst- und denkraum“ exhibition in Bern.
Lilian began her artistic career studying sculpture at the „Scuola di Scultura in Peccia“ and the „Académia de la Escuela Massana“ in Barcelona. She studied art education in Zurich and holds a „Master in Expressive Arts and Psychology“ from the European Graduate School in Leuk. She furthered her education at the „F+F School of Art and Design“ in Zurich with a focus on performance art and at the „Academia Teatro Dimitri“ in Verscio, specializing in theater and contemporary stage art.
In recent years, she has participated in several artist residency programs, including in 2022 at Villa Rosa in Loco (TI), supported by the Temporatio Foundation, the Oertli Foundation, and the Canton of Schaffhausen’s Cultural Promotion. In 2021, she attended the Sasso Residency in Vairano (TI) and the Atelierhaus Sciaredo in Barbengo (TI), supported by the Fondazione Sciaredo.
Since 2020, she has regularly conducted professional performance coaching sessions at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Lilian Frei – Biografie
Wer über ihre Kunst schreibe, sagt Lilian Frei, berichte besser von ihrem Überleben in der Welt, von ihren Gewohnheiten und ihrer Sinneslust. Es fällt der Künstlerin schwer, sich in unserem genormten Leben zurechtzufinden. Sie braucht etwas, wogegen oder womit sie kämpfen kann. Es geht ihr um das Ganze!
In ihrem langjährigen künstlerischen Schaffen sucht und findet Lilian Frei immer wieder neue Formen, die scheinbar selbstverständliche Alltäglichkeit und ihre Normen zu durchbrechen und in Frage zu stellen. Oft arbeitet sie aktiv mit Menschen, die erstmals mit derartiger Kunst in Berührung kommen. Mit ihren plastischen und installativen Arbeiten hingegen setzt sie klare Statements, die – im Gegensatz zur Performance – im Raum präsent bleiben.
2024 wurde Lilian für den renommierten „Swiss Performance Art Award“ nominiert und nahm mit „Mandamiento“ am „PEPA Pequeño Evento de Performance Art“ in Madrid teil. Im selben Jahr erhielt sie ein Stipendium für das Kunstatelier der Stadt Dübendorf von der Kultur- und Sportkommission Dübendorf verliehen. Sie stellte bei der jurierten Gruppenausstellung „Objektkunst im Fokus“, Visarte Luzern aus, sowie an der Jahresausstellung in der „Galerie Kupper Modern & Friends“ (Visarte Zürich) im Oktober 2024.

Lilian begann ihre künstlerische Laufbahn mit Bildhauerei an der „Scuola di Scultura in Peccia“ und der „Académia de la Escuela Massana“, Barcelona. Sie studierte Kunstpädagogik in Zürich und hält einen „Master in Expressive Arts and Psychologie“ der Europäischen Hochschule in Leuk. Weitere Studien absolvierte sie an der „F+F Schule für Kunst und Design“, Zürich mit Fokus auf Performance-Kunst sowie an der „Academia Teatro Dimitri“, Verscio im Bereich Theater und zeitgenössische Bühnenkunst.
In den vergangenen Jahren war sie in mehreren Artist-in-Residence-Programmen tätig, darunter 2022 in der Villa Rosa in Loco (TI), gefördert von der Temporatio-Stiftung, der Oertli-Stiftung und der Kulturförderung Kanton Schaffhausen, sowie 2021 in der Sasso Residency in Vairano (TI) und im Atelierhaus Sciaredo Barbengo (TI), gefördert von der Fondazione Sciaredo.
Seit 2020 leitet sie regelmäßig Fachcoachings im Bereich Performance an der Hochschule Luzern.
